Qualcomm, Maxis, ASTRO Join Hands for MediaFLO Trial in Malaysia
September 14, 2007
US-based Qualcomm and Malaysian Maxis Communications and ASTRO All Asia Networks announced on August 29 an agreement to test Qualcomm's mobile broadcasting technology MediaFLO in Malaysia starting in the third quarter of 2007. For the trial to be conducted in Kuala Lumpur, ASTRO is expected to provide 25 live content channels via an 8MHz UHF (Ultra High Frequency) channel. In addition, Clipcasting, a service enabling short-format video clips to be cached on mobile devices and accessed by users for viewing at a later time, will also be tested in the project. Capabilities of the MediaFLO system will be assessed for the possibility of deployment in Maxis's mobile broadcasting services, slated for commercialization in 2008.
